It turns out that a significant part of Utö Island is also a military testing site and weapons range.
I noticed the signs first:
And then we stumbled upon the military base itself:
I was rather shocked to be freely walking around and exploring the military base of a NATO member. I knew that Sweden was not uptight but, fucking hell, I could have walked off with all manner of weapons and equipment:

Naturally, The Velvet Rocket was compelled to investigate the test site and other weapons ranges.

There isn’t much to stop one from venturing in… Well, aside from an appeal to common sense:

And, of course, a hell of a lot of unexploded ordnance:

Despite its small size, Utö truly has something for everyone:
